Android Auto puts Google Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone on your Honda's Display Audio screen so you can use them with fewer distractions. If your Honda has Android Auto, setup is quick. You plug in your phone or connect it once wirelessly, and Android Auto takes it from there. Watch the video, then follow the steps that match your Honda.

How to Set Up Android Auto in Your Honda

Before you start

  1. Park your Honda and turn the power on, or to Accessory.
  2.
  3. Check your phone. Android 9 or newer works with most wired connections, and wireless needs Android 11 or newer. Android Auto is built into Android 10 and newer. On Android 9, install the Android Auto app from Google Play first.
  4.
  5. Have a high-quality USB cable ready, and make sure your phone has an active data plan.

Choose your connection type

Not sure which one your Honda has? Check the list of compatible models below or look in your owner's manual. Wireless Android Auto is available on select newer models, and your phone needs 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

Option A: Wired Android Auto (USB cable)

  1. Plug your phone into the USB port marked with the USB symbol, using a high-quality USB cable.
  2.
  3. When the Display Audio screen asks if you'd like to connect Android Auto, select Yes.
  4.
  5. If Android Auto doesn't open on its own, select Connect on the screen.
  6.
  7. Accept any prompts on your phone. Android Auto appears on the Display Audio screen.

Option B: Wireless Android Auto (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi)

  1. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your phone, and pair your phone with your Honda over Bluetooth.
  2.
  3. On the touchscreen, select Home > General Settings > Connections > Manage Device Connections.
  4.
  5. Select the Android Auto icon next to your phone to turn on Android Auto.
  6.
  7. If your phone asks for permission to accept the connection, accept it.
  8.
  9. Select the Android Auto icon on the touchscreen to open the Android Auto home screen. Your phone should reconnect on its own next time.

Menu names can differ by model year, so your owner's manual has the exact steps for your Honda. Wireless Android Auto and the in-car Wi-Fi hotspot can't run at the same time. If you use both, connect Android Auto with a USB cable.

Using Android Auto in Your Honda

Once you're connected, press and hold the talk button on your steering wheel, or say "Hey Google," and ask for what you need. You can also use the touchscreen.

From the touchscreen or by voice, you can:

  • Get directions with Google Maps, including real-time traffic
  •
  • Make phone calls and send texts hands-free
  •
  • Listen to music, podcasts and audiobooks

Many third-party navigation, messaging and music apps also work with Android Auto. While your phone is connected to Android Auto, Bluetooth audio isn't available from that phone. Other paired phones can still stream audio over Bluetooth.

Turn Android Auto Off

For a wired connection, unplug the cable. To stop wireless connections, go to Home > General Settings > Connections > Manage Device Connections on the touchscreen, select your phone and delete it. You can also open Settings on your phone, search for Android Auto, tap Previously connected cars and forget your Honda.

Android Auto Not Connecting? Try These Fixes

If Android Auto won't connect or keeps disconnecting, go through these one at a time and test after each. They follow guidance from Google and Honda.

  • Restart your phone and turn your Honda off and on again.
  •
  • Try a different high-quality USB cable, and make sure it's in the USB port marked with the USB symbol. Charge-only cables won't start Android Auto.
  •
  • Update your phone's software and the Android Auto app in Google Play.
  •
  • Connecting wirelessly? Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi stay on, your phone runs Android 11 or newer, and it supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Turn off the in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, or use a USB cable instead.
  •
  • Remove your phone from the list under Home > General Settings > Connections > Manage Device Connections, then connect it again.
  •
  • Open Settings on your phone, search for Android Auto, tap Previously connected cars, forget your Honda, and set it up again.

Android Auto FAQs

How do I set up Android Auto in my Honda?

With your Honda in Park and powered on, plug your Android phone into the USB port marked with the USB symbol using a high-quality cable. Select Yes on the touchscreen if it asks, then select Connect if Android Auto doesn't open on its own. On models with wireless Android Auto, you can also pair your phone over Bluetooth and turn on Android Auto under Manage Device Connections.

Does my Honda have Android Auto?

Most Hondas from 2016 on do, including the Accord, Civic, CR-V, Pilot, Ridgeline, Odyssey, Passport and HR-V. Check the model list on this page, since features vary by model year and trim.

Can I use Android Auto wirelessly in my Honda?

Yes, on select newer models. You need a phone with Android 11 or newer, 5 GHz Wi-Fi and an active data plan. Pair your phone over Bluetooth, turn on Android Auto next to your phone under Manage Device Connections, then accept the prompt on your phone. If your Honda only supports wired Android Auto, use a USB cable.

Why won't Android Auto connect in my Honda?

Start with the basics. Use a high-quality data cable in the USB port marked with the USB symbol, since charge-only cables and the wrong port are the most common causes. Restart your phone and your Honda, update your phone and the Android Auto app, then remove your phone from the Honda's device list and connect it again.

Why can't I use Bluetooth audio while Android Auto is connected?

Android Auto takes over the phone and audio connection for the phone that's using it, so Bluetooth audio isn't available from that phone. Other phones that are already paired can still stream audio over Bluetooth.

Why does Android Auto keep disconnecting?

Start with the cable, since a worn or low-quality cable is a common cause. If you connect wirelessly, keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on, and don't run the in-car Wi-Fi hotspot at the same time. If it keeps dropping, switch to a USB cable or remove your phone from the device list and pair it again.

How do I turn off Android Auto in my Honda?

For a wired connection, unplug the cable. To stop wireless connections, go to Home > General Settings > Connections > Manage Device Connections, select your phone and delete it. You can also open Settings on your phone, search for Android Auto, tap Previously connected cars and forget your Honda.

Which Android phones work with Android Auto in a Honda?

Most wired connections need a phone with Android 9 or newer, and wireless needs Android 11 or newer plus 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Android Auto is built into Android 10 and newer. On Android 9, install the Android Auto app from Google Play.
